About Edith Wakumire
1955 Edith was six months old when her mother died. Twelve years later her father was murdered. To pay her school fees Edith grew coffee by day and collected bamboo shoots in the forests of Mt Elgon by night.
1973/80 During Idi Amin’s years of terror Edith was at university in Kampala. Her husband David smuggled bibles into Uganda for Open Doors and her sister was Amin’s secretary.
1991 After a month’s leadership training in Singapore, Edith founded the church-based Uganda Women Concern Ministry (UWCM).UWCM volunteers now care for over 11,000 people of all faiths affected by HIV/Aids. They sponsor the education of many orphans.
1998 In New York Kofi Annan presented Edith with a United Nations Development Programmeaward for her work on the Eradication of Poverty.
2010 Edith now speaks as a world authority on the relation-ship between Aids, poverty, and a woman’s place in society.
About Margaret Spivey
Margaret lived in East Africa for fourteen years, and returned to Uganda to learn about Edith’s life. Margaret has written several books for children, won prizes for short stories and poetry, and wrote for Scripture Union’s children’s work for twelve years.
